Permits for Burning Within the Town of Trenton

You do not need a burn permit for a recreational fire (warming, cooking, ceremonial, aesthetic) inside a fire pit and not exceeding 3 feet in diameter and 3 feet high.

Rules Updated 10/24/23

Permits for brush fires, agricultural fires, or fires larger than 3 ft are available free of charge on The State of Maine site maineburnpermit.com. It is also the quickest option to obtain a burn permit. Town of Trenton Fire Warden Steve Heckman can only issue fire permits if he is at the station by chance. The town office will not be issuing permits.

It is imperative that you read and follow all the instructions on the Burn Permit. These include but, not limited to size of the fire allowed, burning times allowed, and what is allowed to be burned.

All burns must comply with the conditions set forth on the burn permit.

Burning is only allowed on Class 1 and 2 days (Low and Moderate Fire Danger) and normally only after 5PM on the weekdays (anytime during weekends) with some exceptions. This is for a variety of reasons, but mainly due to the lack of volunteers that may be needed to respond to a fire during the weekday

Trenton resides in Zone 11 – see fire danger here: Predicted Fire Danger & Class Day.

Normally on low fire danger days, burning is allowed after the fire danger report is published by Maine Forest Service (around 9 or 9:30).

You can access the weather report as well as other pertinent information on the site maineburnpermit.com Please follow all guidelines on the site and print your permit to have in possession while burning. Fire officials will be getting text notifications for all permits. Restrictions and/or bans may change without notice.
